"What River Means To Me"
[a poem about being near River Phoenix]

L.A.
Westwood.
a few.
hours off.
tour.
university campus.
childrens' voices.
singing.
guitar strumming.
people gathered.
listening.
smiling.
enjoying.
sit to listen.
take shoes off.
feet in grass.
break in music.
meet boy.
meet girl.
singers.
boy questions.
i answer.
boy gets serious.
asks another.
i'm blinded.
bright.
blue-white.
flash.
from eyes.
sheer genius.
that flash.
come back.
to reality.
try to-.
-give advice.
he tries.
strums.
we like.
continues strumming.
smiling.
gives me.
paper slip.
phone number.
they go back.
singing together.
people leaving.
dropping coins.
and paper.
i stand.
to go.
drop paper.
add a slip.
phone number.
go on.
with life.
don't hear.
don't call.
few years later.
phone message.
Chicago office.
i call.
give password.
my name.
he answers.
all time.
falls away.
like it.
was yesterday.
we connect.
again.
the emptiness.
gone.
the friendship.
there.
the voice.
the genius.
the musician.
now actor.
movies.
second one.
going to-.
-make it.
the film.
the story.
four boys.
growing up.
becoming men.
instant success.
international.
movie star.
more movies.
more films.
more success.
friendship.
continues.
some meetings.
lots of calls.
back and forth.
get to know.
each other.
become like.
one.
brothers.
understand.
each other.
cheering up.
sharing.
helping.
trying.
being there.
what else.
can be said.
it continued.
years.
it grew.
it flourished.
it became deep.
meaningful.
he mattered.
i mattered.
we mattered.
to each other.
our lives.
were changed.
he changed mine.
i changed.
because of him.
he made.
a difference.
made me.
better.
made me.
think.
made me.
understand.
made me.
question.
made me.
wonder.
made me.
quest.
made me.
thirst.
for knowledge.
for understanding.
for love.
for kinship.
for friendship.
for loyalty.
for brotherhood.

then.
that afternoon.
time off.
left lot.
into town.
to party.
eventually.
Viper Room.
big crowd.
many people.
couldn't say no.
tried it.
with all else.
cocktail.
messed up.
too far.
couldn't.
stay awake.
going.
unconscious.
sliding under.
table.
taken out.
sidewalk.
convulsions.
still alive.
still.
still.
still.
paramedics.
got there.
doa.
taken hospital.
pronounced.
doa.
this life gone.
that talent gone.
my friend gone.
my brother gone.
that star.
gone.
that genius.
gone.
from our lives.

but he.
lives on.
in us.
around us.
through us.
with us.
every day.
every way.
he's here.
still.
still.
still.
he won't go.
he's gone.
he can't go.
he's gone.
he's part.
of us.
us all.
we're part.
of him.
he's here.
with us.
in us.
for all.
time.
forever.
eternity.
waiting.
for us.
to come.
to him.
eventually.
he'll be.
there.
waiting.
when we.
go.
to the-.
-other side.
he was here.
but an instant.
and was gone.
affected we were.
greatly.
painfully.
magically.
historically.
for our.
eventual.
betterment.
