A River Runs Through It
A Tribute to River Phoenix

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I once thought my life was complete,
it all seemed to be really neat;
My job was a score, with glory galore,
I couldn't have asked for anything more.

When traveling one day, a far distance away,
to a city I'd been to before;
On business I went, much time to be spent,
to make sure that I had the rent.

I met a young boy, who was spreading his joy,
on a guitar he'd had many a year;
He spoke of his music, his future and choices,
I'm sure that he heard "other voices".

He then became famous, a star of all faces,
his countenance seen world-wide;
He messed up his choices, saying 'yes' to those voices,
and went on a partying binge.

He died late one night, at a party "Out-O'-Sight",
at a club on the Sunset Strip;
He'd had 'downers' and 'eight-balls' and booze to the eyeballs,
I'm sure that he couldn't see straight.

'Out-cold' on the sidewalk, as on-lookers passed,
his life on a thread from all he'd a-massed;
Great quakes, shakes and shivers, his body in heaves,
his soul left him there, like dead dried-up leaves.

On-lookers laughed, the party went on...,
...while there at their feet, a great star passed on.

My pain is unbounded, my misery complete,
I just cannot find a place to retreat;
My heart is so broken, my spirit is too,
there is no help -- so what can I do?

I hide it inside, for ever it seems,
My heart and my spirit no longer have dreams;
I cry and I cry, the tears flow like rivers,
my heart doesn't beat, instead it just shivers.

My heart is a wound, the blood is all gone,
with help, hope, and prayer, my life will go on;
The blood is replaced, by a stream of large size,
the size is so large, right up through my eyes.

Repairing myself now, for better or worse,
with help from new 'strangers', get rid of this curse;
They help me greatest, in thought, word, and deed,
and seem to provide mostly all that I need.

My heart has a river, it's Rio in size,
the river's so huge, that it bursts through my eyes;
A river runs through it... Through my heart...
...a River Phoenix...
